the angelus is a simple remembrance of the incarnation, traditionally said three times a day. it is customary in some places to toll a church bell at six am, noon, and six pm, calling those who hear to this prayer. the prayer is unvarying, and is as follows:
the angel of the Lord announced unto Mary
it is customary to make the sign of the cross at the mention of the
cross in the closing prayer.
and she conceived by the Holy Spirit.
hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
behold the handmaid of the Lord;
hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
and the Word was made flesh
hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
pray for us, o holy mother of God pour your grace into our hearts, o Lord, that we who have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the virgin Mary, may by his cross and passion be brought to the glory of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. amen. in the easter season, the angelus is replaced with the regina coeli:
o queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia,
for he whom you were worthy to bear, alleluia, has arisen as he said, alleluia. pray for us to God, alleluia. rejoice and be glad, o virgin Mary, alleluia, for the Lord has risen indeed, alleluia. o God, through the resurrection of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, you filled the world with joy; grant, we pray, that with the help of his virgin mother Mary, we may attain to the joys of everlasting life, through the same Christ our Lord. amen.
