the angelus is a simple remembrance of the incarnation, traditionally said three times a day. it is customary in some places to toll a church bell at six am, noon, and six pm, calling those who hear to this prayer.

the prayer is unvarying, and is as follows:

the angel of the Lord announced unto Mary
and she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
    blessed are you among women,
    and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
holy Mary, mother of God
    pray for us sinners now,
    and at the hour of our death.

behold the handmaid of the Lord;
be it unto me according to your word.

it is customary to make the sign of the cross at the mention of the cross in the closing prayer.

in the easter season, the angelus is replaced with the regina coeli:

o queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia,
for he whom you were worthy to bear, alleluia,
has arisen as he said, alleluia.
pray for us to God, alleluia.
rejoice and be glad, o virgin Mary, alleluia,
for the Lord has risen indeed, alleluia.

o God, through the resurrection of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, you filled the world with joy; grant, we pray, that with the help of his virgin mother Mary, we may attain to the joys of everlasting life, through the same Christ our Lord. amen.
