the nunc dimittis is the song of Simeon. forty days after the birth of Jesus, he is brought by his parents to the temple, where they make the customary offerings for a first-born son. two elderly people, Simeon and Anna, recognize Jesus as the coming Messiah and bless him. Simeon sings this song. it is found at luke 2:29–32 in the bible.

this canticle is traditionally said at bedtime prayers.

Lord, you now have set your servant free
    to go in peace as you have promised;
for these eyes of mine have seen the Savior,
    whom you have prepared for all the world to see:
a Light to enlighten the nations,
